Supported mobile browers

On a "supported browser"

I can't even see what I'm typing sooo. Forum on Mobile is ummm.?1129-232817|225x500](upload://vP72GTv9cSrM3uibodGY4l5HaVU.png)

Which browser and version?

Remember that we don’t make the forum software. There is a forum for it which is the best place to ask about compatibility issues:

Make sure you aren’t doing things like disabling javascript as well.

On android. An old opera. Only keep it on my phone because it's the only browser that still blocks all adds, particularly on YouTube.

The other is a current vivaldi my default and fav on PC. But plays YouTube add so I only use it for this forum.

But on mobile neither are showing.

I dont know. I'm rarely poking at my phone. Thou in the past month I can't get to the forum any which way.

Try an up to date browser. I think the days of web developers maintaining compatibility with old browsers died with Internet Explorer, for better or worse.

This compatibility problem not only affects mobile access to D Opus, but also anyone still using Windows 7 or below. The last version of Firefox that works on Win 7 is 115 (ESR). The suggested Firefox version by Discourse is version 148, which does not run on Win7. Has DOpus officially stated that they no longer support Win 7?

More importantly, does DOpus care that their subscribers on Win 7 are no longer able to renew their subscriptions (or even post replies) because of Discourse's non-support of the older version of Firefox that works in Win7?

We can't do anything about it. It is what it is.

People still using Windows 7 as their only machine for web browsing must be used to this, as so many forums now use the same Discourse software. The Opus forum is hardly unique in this regard.

You don't need to access the forum to renew a licence.

Well, until I tried to update my subscription to Opus last month, the only penalty that I've experienced when using Firefox 115 (ESR) to browse, is that the web portal for Waterscope required Win10 and AVG needed some serious restrictions on what apps it could auto-delete. Now it may be that I've gradually self-censored products that insist on joining the legion of doom when it comes to privacy, but until I could not re-new via Opus's web portal, I have been mostly a happy clam.

The link to Discourse's web site did reveal their suggestion for Win 7 users to use the Chromium-derived browsers of Thorium or Supermium.

Having said that, how would I have gone about re-newing without using your web portal built by Discourse?

Discourse isn't what runs our main website. It only runs this forum.

Good point, except your main site for GPSoftware failed to take any action once I entered my Opus registration code. It did not reject it, it did not accept it; it just sat their silently mocking my use of Firefox 115 (ESR).

Succeeding at re-newing required that I start my Win10 VM, fire up Firefox v148 and your GPSoftware site. Seems like a lot of work. Are you happy with this burden for your Win7 customers?

This thread is about the forum. If you want to report a problem about the main site, it's confusing to post about it here.

But you also cannot seriously expect the entire world to support and test against old web browser versions forever. That just is not realistic. The web has moved on from being held back like it was in the old days of Internet Explorer.

I think you are stretching the situation. We are not talking about IE3. We are talking about a Firefox browser that worked just fine in June of 2025 to access your forum and your main web site. Can you point to a feature only available in the current Discourse forum software that GPSoftware cannot live without; that has been a boon since June of 2025 to your interaction with your customers?

Now I am not wanting to belabor this point. I am a happy D Opus user, I did get my subscription re-newed, so you should also be happy. Enough said.

We haven't made any changes to our main website to stop it working with any specific browser, fwiw. As long as javascript works it shouldn't care which browser you use.

Interesting. When entry of my registration code failed to move the screen forward, I did think to check that Javascript had not become disabled in Firefox 115 (ESR) ,,,about:config. I remember it as being enabled. Just checked again; it is still. So I still don't know why GPSoftware would not accept my reg. code.

To test this apparent freezing of the update page, if I tried a second time (using Firefox 115 (ESR), to re-new my subscription, after entry of my reg code, would your site recognize that I have already re-newed?

Looking at the dates, Firefox 115 is newer than I thought. Since it came out after the main website was made, I'd be surprised if the browser version is the problem.

But the other thing I saw was that Firefox 115 ESR isn't even supported by Firefox anymore from the start of this month. You will have to upgrade your web browser at some point in the near future. There's no sense putting it off. That version won't be safe, and will work with less and less of the internet as time goes on.

You said there was an error message mentioning Firefox 115 specifically before, now you're saying something is freezing. It's difficult to suggest fixes if the problem description keeps changing or isn't accurate.

Yes, I know that Firefox 115 (ESR) is not supported, that is why Mozilla called it ESR (End of Service Life). But they did not delete it, recognizing there are a lot of Win 7 users still hanging on.

Me mentioning that your renewal page failed to "taken any action" when I entered my registration code is not functionally different than saying that the renewal page "froze". The result was that I was not able to renew when using Firefox 115. Had to use Win10 and FF 148.

I will again ask the question, if, using Firefox 115, I try a second time to update my subscription using my registration code, will the renewal page recognize that my subscription is already renewed? If so, then I can test whether the page "takes no action" or "freezes" without hazard.

If you enter your registration code, it will either offer you a further renewal or tell you you can't renew more than three years ahead, either way nothing will happen unless you proceed further.

My apologies for raising an alarm about access to the renewal page at GP Software. Using Firefox 115 on my Win 7 PC, I was able to get the expected response after entering my reg. code once again today.

Once entered the user email box popped up and after entering that, a message displayed that I was good to go until 2029. Good news.

Thinking back on the difficulties on 2/21/26, when I was first trying to renew, I tried to log into the Forum to see if others were having similar problems. Had to switch to a Win10 VM in order to filter the forum messages. Thought that I previously failed to renew from Win7, running Firefox 115 (ESR). I definitely remember being stuck on the reg. code field with no other fields offered, which prompted me to switch to the Win10 VM before getting success.

In any case, my test today worked as expected from Firefox 115 on my Win7 PC. I wish I could attribute it to AI hallucinations, but I can't. Thanks for helping resolve this.

Hasn't the critical bug fix support for Firefox 115 (ESR) expired?

It may have. More important, support for Firefox 115 (ESR) by the Discourse Meta forum software was curtailed in July 2025, causing a fair amount of push-back on the Discourse web forum, itself.

I am not trying to roll back the lemming-like march of all customers to becoming renters with open doors, little more than a product paying a monthly fee to be a surf. Just trying to understand what value Discourse's actions in July are to the users / owners of this forum.

We don't have any control over changes Discourse make to the forum software. They often annoy us too. But at the end of the day it's the software we decided to use, so we're pretty much stuck with it.

We've already switched package once (from phpBB) which was not the easiest job in the world, and so we don't intend to do it again if we can avoid it.
