I have 2 folders i am trying to synchronize. it tells me i have more than 200 files (out of 1600+) that need to be synchronized because the timestamps are different. in most cases Opus says the times are off by 1 hour, in some cases by 1 minute.
when i compare the same folders using an old program i am trying to replace only 1 file (correctly) shows as need to be changed. And, the timestamps agree.
also when i right click on a jpg file using explorer and follow the OPEN menu under Opus I see Paint and also Paint.net. when I use Opus the Paintnet program does not show.
checking DST took care of most of the timestamp differences. there are still 13 files that are off by exactly one minute. But, I think I can take care of all timestamp problems by copying all the source files onto the memory stick.
any thoughts on why paintnet does show on the OPEN list when i right click a jpg file?
It's getting confusing talking about two issues in one thread.
What's wrong with the sync then? If the timestamps really are one minute off and you've told Opus to compare date & time then the two files will be considered different since the timestamps are different (and not different by exactly 1 hour (DST Compenstation) or only by a few seconds (the other option).
Which timestamp are you looking at? Modified or one of the others?
i copied all my files to the memory stick and ran SYNCHRONIZE against the 2 folders. 14 files show with timestamps that differ by up to one minute. the timestamps should be identical. the 2 files are the same and have not been modified since 2006.
the IGNORE SECONDS WHEN COMPARING BY TIMESTAMP box is checked. the timestamps should not be off by a nanosecond let alone by 1 minute since one is a fresh copy of the other made less than an hour ago? or there is something very subtle about timestamps I do not understand?
I just looked at the properties of 2 of the files. one shows a modified date of 6/19/2006 2:41:58. the other has 6/19/2006 2:42:00. How can this be? Perhaps because the times that display are only off by 2 seconds but show with different minutes Opus thinks they need to be synch'd?
I looked at 2 file that have the same time but the time stamps differ by 1 second. once again one is a fresh copy of the other.
Could it be because my hard drive is NTFS and the memory stick is FAT32 that somehow makes the stamps different? If I reformat my memory stick to NTFS the timestamps go away? Or, if this is the problem could Opus become smart enough to compensate?
I just copied one of the 'bad' files to another NTFS hard drive. no change in the timestamp. Looks like it is a NTFS/FAT issue timestamp?
I tried to send you one of the offending file but I cannot tell if you received that actual file.
Some devices have a worse timestamp resolution than others. I can't remember the details but that almost certainly explains why the timestamps aren't exact when you copy from your NTFS HDD to the FAT32 USB drive. If in doubt try copying the same files with another program to confirm that the same thing happens. (Assuming the other program copies the timestamps at all, of course.)
In the future, please start separate threads for totally unrelated issues. It's easier on everyone that way. (See the FAQ on this for more thoughts.)
Having never used Paint.Net before, I installed it and I do not get a context menu item in Opus or Explorer. I can't see any options/prefernces/settings dialog in Paint.Net, either. So you'll have to tell me how to make Paint.Net add itself to the context menu, I think.
