The behaviour of set desktop wallpaper - span

When I use the set desktop wallpaper command from the tools bar and select span , it works- the image spans the three screens..
When i right click an image in the viewer pane to do it, i get a fuzzied image in the pane and no spanned wallpaper. the other options ( fit , fill, etc ) all work fine.
Any thoughts?

Seems to work fine here with a PNG image.

What kind of image are you using?

What are the dimensions of the image and of the screens?

Has the image been edited in the viewer before setting it as the wallpaper, or are you setting it as wallpaper right after loading it?

i have tried various images including png, all behave the same it seems.
i tried setting viewer pane to display original image size but no change of behaviour.
i have tried 1200 by 800 and 4000 by 2000 pixel images amongst others.
the screens are 1) 55" 3520 by 1980 pixels
2) 27" 1600 by 1024
3) 27" 1600 by 1024
the images have not been edited .

i should add it is a windows 10 1803 system.
i am going now to change to windows 7 system on another set of same hardware to see if that makes any difference. that will take a little while.

I'm not sure what's going on there. The only difference between the modes is which number is passed to the Windows API, so it's strange it makes any difference. Windows handles the actual image stretching/layout, based on the requested mode, and we provide it with the same image/file in all cases.

Saying that, the Windows API for setting wallpaper is known to have some bugs in Windows 8 and 10. In particular, if you go from a solid color to a background image, it will ignore the request. We have some workarounds in place for that, but you may have found another bug in the API which we don't (always?) avoid.

Windows 7 doesn't have the same bugs (they got introduced in 8 and were still there in 10 last we checked), but Win7 also doesn't support Span mode at all.

I can't think why it would be different from the viewer vs the main toolbar, though.

After making the change, what do you see in the Windows "Personalise" settings panel? Is the right image there? If you change it to another mode, does it still look blurred or become correct? If it looks OK then, does changing it back to Span mode work or does the problem return even there?

i am now on win7 and as you say there is no span option.
on win 10 the fuzzy image remains even if you load a new image . closing the viewer pane and reopening it clears the fuzz problem.
i am going to return to win 10.
i could mention that i changed my password while on 10 and used the new one , but here on 7 it wanted the old one , but i'll work that one out later.

to clarify, the blurred image is only in the viewer pane , not on the desktop which has not changed at all.
i can use the viewer to set a fit desktop and then change that to span in windows personalise .
and i can just use the tools menu, which is quicker. Really this is now just in case a solution comes to mind for someone who knows more than I, or a bug noted . I can manage with tools menu thanks.

I've reproduced the problem now.

I was trying in the standalone viewer, not the viewer pane. The menu in the viewer pane is messed up here. We'll get that fixed for the next update.
