Too many problems with DO9 and Vista UAC

I gave up after many hours of frustration trying to get DO9 to work with UAC. Whenever I started DO9 after a reboot, I had to run through the initialization dialog. Even when I ran as administrator. When I did start it, I did not have any menus or toolbars and could not turn them on, no matter what I did. Furthermore, when I set options sometimes it would stay set and sometimes everything would be set back to its original state. Was that annoying!!!

I made a personal decision that I rather have DO9 than UAC, so I turned off UAC to get DO9 to run. Now, everything works fine.

Did you previously install Opus 8 on Vista and set it to run as administrator (or any other compatibility options)? If so then that's why you're having problems now as the compatibility flags are remembered even when you replace a program with a new version. I think there's a FAQ which covers this but shout if it isn't clear, or if you had never installed Opus 8.

No, I did not previously install DO8. When I installed Vista, I checked each product for Vista compatibility and when I saw that DO8 was not compatible, I did not install it. Instead I substituted another explorer replacement product that I thought would hold me over until DO9.

Is there a GPSoftware directory under

C:\Users<YOUR USER NAME>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files

?

It sounds a lot like Opus's config data is being saved to the wrong place, possibly because of Vista's virtualisation stuff, but that should not happen with Opus 9 unless it's being run in XP compatibility mode or something like that.

If you type these aliases into the Opus path bar, which folders do you end up in? Is it the same folders if you turn UAC back on and restart Opus?

/dopusdata
/dopusglobaldata
/dopuslocaldata

Yes, there is. However, the modify date is 3/18/2007, much earlier than the install date for DO9. If DO9 does not install with that date, then I may have migrated it over when I restored my files. BTW I check security and I have full control access to tis folder.

Second part of the question. I turned UAC back on and also went back and turned off compatibility mode + Run as Admin (I turned these on AFTER I started having problems with the configurations setting going away and didn't reset them when UAC was turned off). When I started DO9 again, had to run through initialization again, all my settings disappeared and I lost all my menus and toolbars. So I could I could not get to a dialog to enter the command.

Something else is funny. Did what you said and got somewhat different results with UAC on or off. Got an access violation on the GPsoft folder as well, but according to the results on the secuity tab, I have full control. Seems like the problem does seem to be related to DO9 not being able to put the config file where it wants to. But I'm not sure how to change this.

Hi JohnR,

Yes there seems to be quite a few of us having maybe not exactly the same, but certainly similar problems with Vista's UAC. I have resorted to leaving it switched off for now. The Opus team have got a lot of other wrinkles to sort, and the UAC one may take a while to iron out.

Quad

I would turn off all compatibility options on dopus.exe and dopusrt.exe, uninstall Opus completely and then delete all configuration files, especially the ones in the VirtualStore directory. Then reboot and install Opus 9 again.

Something is clearly wrong if you have any settings under VirtualStore since Opus 9 has a manifest file that tells Vista not to create files in there.

Check the digital signatures on the dopus.exe file as well (and the installer you're using) to make sure they're the originals.

Based on your earlier comments and the information you provided regarding the location of the configuration files, I did exactly what said in your most recent suggestion. So far it seems to work, even with UAC turned on. I can't explain (for sure) what I did incorrectly, but it is possible that I installed the product with the 'run as adminstrator' rather than under my userid.

In any case, as far as I can tell DO9 is working good like it should!!!

Thank you very much for your help. I wish I would have said something sooner.
