I guess the subject says enough, but a short recap: when clicking on the Transhcan / Recycle bin the status bar does not show the total number of files / bytes like in a normal folder.
Is there any way of setting it up so it does?

That's normal.
When in the Recycle Bin the status bar comes from Windows and is (at least in Windows 7) just a simple count of items or selected items.
