Trial user here, with two probems: 1) Explorer crashes; 2) weird 'desktop' entries

Dear all

I've just installed Opus (on Windows 10 Pro - 22H2 2009: 19045) and I like what I see. But I have two problems.

  1. When with Opus (13.9) installed I run explorer.exe, the latter tends to hang or crash. Admittedly I have not rebooted since installing Opus. (Opus does prevent various means of launcung explorer.exe, but not all of them. I wanted explorer.exe for various things, including testing - comparing with - Opus.) But is this a common problem - with, perhaps, a known solution? EDIT: it does seem like a somewhat common problem (see . . but, ah, as a new user I'm not allowed many links). One of those posts does allege a need to reboot after installation; I'll try that.

  2. Opus files everthing under 'Desktop':

I think Opus might be inheriting this weird behaviour from explorer.exe. Does anyone know how I can turn off this behaviour (in Opus and explorer?) Indeed, in Opus, I have, er, two 'desktop's under 'Desktop':

Actually, in a way, there is a third problem. It's this. In order to access this forum, I have to fully disable my (reputable) VPN. That's not good!

Thank you for your time.

I can add that even after a reboot explorer.exe stutters very badly. I do have quite a few shell extensions . . I see nothing in the Windows logs, but those logs are so full of various sorts of noise . .

This isn't normal at all.
This sounds more like the Brazil air tragedy, possibly from hydraulic trim failure or a Hijacking.
Something is very very wrong.
It will need the expertise of the Directory Opus Developers to attempt a solution.
Good Luck !

  1. It's not normal for Opus to affect File Explorer like that, no. Rebooting is worth a try if you updated from Opus 12 to 13 but other than that it isn't usually needed. Even then, it's not usually needed.

If you still see problems after rebooting, backup your Opus configuration (Settings > Backup & Restore), then uninstall Opus and reboot the machine. See if the problem is still there. It may turn out to be unrelated to Opus.

  2. Preferences / Folder Tree / Contents.

  3. We don't block VPNs unless that's something new the forum software has started doing by default.

  4. Please Ask one question per thread

@Leo: thank you for the reply.

As I had written in my own reply to my post, I have rebooted and the problems persist.

The problems with Explorer are related to Opus: they occur only when Opus is running and they did not pre-exist my installation of Opus.

On trying to solve the 'desktop' strageness via Preferences / Folder Tree / Contents: therein, disabling the display of virtual folders did not help. Disabling, separately and explicitly, this desktop folder

(which is a virtual folder, I believe - and yet which the prior step left displayed), resulted, weirdly, in this:

But, ah, I found this:

But it seems that whatever I click there I still see the virtual 'desktop' folder and, filed under it, two other folders called 'desktop'.

Ah, OK: the explorer problems might pre-date and not owe to Opus. For, I had forgotten that, just before installing Opus, I had restored my system in a slightly messy way; and I find now that, after uninstalling Opus, the problem persists. My apologies.

I will mark this thread/problem as solved and start a new thread for the remaining problem (well, aside from the forum-not-working-with-my-VPN), namely, the weird 'desktop' stuff.
