Unable to connect to remote host

Hi all,

When I attempt to run the "Check for Program Updates..." utility I get the message "Unable to connect to remote host".

Any suggestions why this is ...? I have run it several times but I get the same message every time.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Roly

Are you behind a firewall that blocks web access? If so you will have to configure Opus to use a web proxy which can be done in Settings -> Preferences - Miscellaneous - Internet Settings.

How can I tell if my firewall blocks it...? I don't understand anything to do with the web - apart from browsing of course. What's a proxy...?

Can you point me in the direction of where I can find information about this please...?

Thanks so far

Are you using Opus at home or in an office? If you're at home then you probably don't need to use a proxy. If you're in an office then you probably do. Either way you can find out by looking at Internet Explorer's settings, or asking a network administrator for the settings.

To check the proxy settings in IE:

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.

This is for home use... I use my memory stick with DO for the office but I don't need internet access there.

I've checked that in IE (does it matter that I use Firefox...?) and all the options are unchecked.

This is what my LAN settings are showing if it's any help...

If you click Start -> run and type cmd.exe and then, in the command prompt that will open, type this:

ping www.gpsoft.com.au

what happens?

You should see something like this printed on the screen:

Pinging [www.gpsoft.com.au](http://www.gpsoft.com.au) [203.34.202.11] with 32 bytes of data:

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

If you see an error message instead then there's some kind of firewall/proxy at work somewhere. (Unless the GPSoftware web server happens to be down at the time... Try pinging another address like news.bbc.co.uk as well to be sure.)

Just to clarify, this is a home PC, not a work one.

Anyway, this is what I get from gpsoft...

I got a message from my firewall asking for access to gpsoft which I permanently granted.

I also get a similar result from the BBC.

Since this I have attempted to "Check for Updates" again but it still will not work.

My guess is that your firewall is blocking dopus.exe from connecting to the internet.

Surely it's not going to be that simple...

...you're right. It was blocked... why though I don't know.

Thanks again.

I'm having the same issue:

  • I'm running DO version 12.23
  • When I check for updates, it says "Unable to connect to remote host"
  • I've confirmed that I'm able to ping www.gpsoft.com.au and also able to view the site in my browser.
  • I checked my firewall rules and there's no outbound rule blocking your domain.
  • I also manually added a firewall rule to allow DO to access the Internet.
  • I have no issues with any other apps being unable to access the Internet.
  • I just installed the latest beta, 12.23.3 and it still has the same issue.

Only thing I can think of to check is if your antivirus is blocking it.

Not using any anti-virus, other than Windows Defender. This isn't some huge deal, it's just weird.

Check if Windows Defender is blocking it

Disabling it made no difference. Like I said, it's no biggie, but if there's a log file or anything else I can check, I'd be willing to dig deeper on this.
