Updating files in a File Collection

I recently installed DOpus 9 (9.5.0.0.3565.x86) on a new netbook running Windows 7 Starter. I created a file collection, as I had done a while ago on my Win XP Pro desktop computer. All seemed well until I tried to update some of the files by copying more recent versions into the file collection. This had always worked smoothly on my Win XP computer, but to my surprise, when I copied a file over to the file collection in the Windows 7 netbook, the older file was not updated. Instead, the newer version of the file was simply added to the files in that folder of the file collection. For example, if I wanted to update a file called booklet.txt with a more recent version of that file, instead of replacing the older file, the new one simply got added, so I now had two files called booklet.txt. I tried this procedure multiple times with files in several different folders. The result was always the same.

Clearly, this is not the way the file collection is supposed to work. I have no idea why this is happening. I don't see this same behavior when I'm not using the file collection. I'd be most grateful for some help in understanding why this is happening and what I can do to correct this.

Thanks in advance.

Are the old and new versions of the file in different places?

If they are the same file -- i.e. the changes were made in-place -- then you don't have to do anything as collections just point at files; they don't contain copies of their data.

If they are different files then collections have always allowed two files with the same name, but from different locations, to co-exist. (If they didn't they wouldn't be very useful for storing the results of Find and Duplicate Files operations.)

Thanks, Leo, for your response. You've made me realize that I've probably always moved updated versions of files FROM the file collection TO my flash drive, so in that case the older version (on the flash drive) was overwritten by the newer version. This time, however, I was trying to take the updated files on my flash drive and use them to update files on my new netbook. From what you've said, apparently creating a file collection on the netbook isn't going to work for this purpose. That's too bad, since with a file collection I can bring together files and folders located all over my computer. Without a file collection, the process of updating will be more tedious, I'm afraid. Oh well... Thanks very much for explaining this to me.
