Is it possible to use Tera Copy for copy operations in DOpus?
When copying folders containing a HUGE number of files then this DOpus copy action seems to use 100% of the computer and makes other programs almost unusable. Also, the DOpus copy dialog becomes impossible to operate: It does not react to mouse actions or it takes a very long time to react.
There is a thread about using it if you search the forum.
What you're describing sounds more like an antivirus issue or something similar, though. Copying lots of files should not involve the CPU much.
The settings under Preferences / File Operations / Copy Attributes can have a great effect on speed when copying lots of small files, since the overhead of copying the extra attributes, metadata, etc. will become significant compared to the overhead of copying a tiny amount of actual data when the files are small.
If you have the destination folder open in a file display, that could also be involved, since it could be inspecting each new file that appears (which should not usually be slow, but could be for certain file types, or if certain information is being extracted (thumbnails, image dimensions, etc.) or with certain third-party software installed that wants to access the files, or due to antivirus scanning the files when things access them),
I have now downloaded the free version of TeraCopy and copied a folder containing a huge number of files (26 GB). The operation was completed in a short time without problems and without afflicting other programs. So I wonder why Teracopy can do it and DOpus not.
Did you look into any of the things I mentioned already?
26 GB is also not a number of files but a total size. Is the issue with a large total size, or a large number of files? The best places to look depends on which seems to be the trigger for the problem.
The type(s) of files being copied is also highly relevant, due to interaction with other software/components (e.g. large installer exe files or archives are more prone to problems with antivirus; videos may be prone to problems with video components if their thumbnails or other data are being extracted due to the target folder being open in a window).
Is the target folder open in a window?
Which attributes do you have Opus configured to copy? Which do you have TeraCopy configured to copy?
(Given the slowdown seems to affect the whole system, my money is on an antivirus issue, since some antivirus will stall other programs if they're busy scanning something in something else. Not many other things can cause that type of issue. Antivirus often treats different programs differently. So try disabling your antivirus as well.)
I have TeraCopy, as well, and don't think it's DOpus causing the "error" message.
If you try dragging files from one folder to another in Windows Explorer, a similar dialog pops up asking if you want to use Windows Explorer or TeraCopy to move the files.
When I move files in Windows Explorer with TeraCopy initiated by drag/drop in Windows Explorer, then no errors are showing up at the end of the operation.
I'd rather help with why you need TeraCopy in the first place, as you shouldn't (unless you want specific features it has, like the way its copy queue works).
But if TeraCopy is showing errors when you use it, you should ask the TeraCopy developers about that. This isn't a support forum for TeraCopy.
Not even the one that is built into Windows? That's unusual, at least.
What about all the other things I suggested looking at and questions I asked?
Dear Leo, as I said: TeraCopy is showing these errors when using it from DOpus, not from Windows File Explorer.
Also, the above TeraCopy "errors" are shown only when MOVING files in Dopus, not when COPYING files! This makes me think that the interaction between DOpus and TeraCopy is erroneous.
