I go into the Settings/File Types and select PDF. I then select Tooltips. It is EMPTY. It is always empty - even if I enter something into it. When I leave and come back, it is empty. Yet, when I go to a PDF file I DO see tool tip info. So something, somewhere, is controlling the tooltip contents. I tried looking into some of the file type categories like "Directory Opus File Types/All Files. I CAN see the Tooltip commands there and that seems to be what is showing for PDF files. I thought I could go to the PDF type and override that - but I cannot get any commands to stay in the PDF tooltip. The previous commands I had entered ARE still being used when I hover over a PDF file. I just don't know where they are or how to change them without starting over and re-entering all the commands (as opposed to seeing what is currently there and making changes.
What you tried should normally work, but file types in Windows are a mess of different things overriding each other in the registry, so it doesn't always work.
A good way to work around this, if you don't want to make the changes at the All Files level, is to create a File Type Group. Assign .PDF to the group and then edit the Info-Tip there.
(You could also/instead add .PDF to the existing Documents group, if you'd want the same info-tips for the Office document types it normally includes.)
Thank you. I did create the file type group. That worked. Mostly. I was hovering over different PDF files to make sure that the correct tooltip was displayed. And, for all but ONE of them it did. But one PDF file displayed a tooltip that had the content of a document tooltip. How is Dopus determining the file type? The extension IS PDF.
I did some further testing. I moved the PDF file: still showing wrong tooltip. I renamed the file extension to JPG. Now shows JPG tooltip info. Changed back to PDF. Still same issue. So it appears that the extension IS what keys the tooltip format.
This is not a big deal since, so far, I have only seen this behavior for the one PDF file. Still, this seems to be a bug and I am curious about why it is happening.
Is PDF in your Documents group as well? Not sure what happens with Info-Tips if an extension is in multiple groups, but that might explain it.
No. It is only in the new group I created per your instructions. I was wondering what would happen if NONE of the tooltip parameters (like Author) existed for that PDF. Would it display a blank tooltip or ???
That'd depend on how the info-tip is defined. The default ones hide lines that are completely blank (so you don't even get the heading).
I tried out my thought (I probably should have done that BEFORE my last reply). I added an author to the PDF that was not showing the correct PDF tooltip format. It now IS showing the correct PDF tooltip! Of course the Author is the only line showing in the tooltip since there is probably no data in any of the other fields in my PDF tooltip definition.
So I am guessing (based on what Dopus APPEARS to be doing) that if the tooltip would be blank it uses some master tooltip format instead of the one defined for the actual file extension.
