Viewer - 2 or more pics side by side

As a photographer, I'm really missing a way to display 2 or more pictures side by side on the same monitor and inside the same viewer. Zooming in should be synced between the shown pictures.
Something like this would really speed up workflow, specially with modern cameras taking 20+ pictures per second.

P.S.: I know Lightroom has this functionality, but I don't use Lightroom.

How about two to four viewers per monitor, side by side, all in sync?

That's not a dynamic solution. It should be simple to select more or less pictures, preferable with a thumbnail strip at the bottom of a the images in the same folder.
