Viewer asks to download the file?

Well done. Nice to know.

Now, I know that they want a huge "per seat" licence fee for the software, but would they be open to a suggestion for a discount for DOpus users?

As I steel myself to go 64-bit when I build my next PC, I will probably take up the discount I get as a user of the earlier version.

Jon,

That's good news re Quickview Plus 11. And I would like to order it now.

Can you supply the exact procedure to install it, and arrange for Opus 9 to use the Preview Handler. I assume that something special has to be done, beyond just installing QVP 11.

I'm glad I continued to press the issue of expanding the viewer caqpability of QVP 9.

I have the older version QVP 8, and they had advised me some time back, that the upgrade discount would only apply to verions 9 or later. Any response from them re discoounts for Opus 9 users?

Ron Hirsch

So long as you are on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or above, just install QVP 11. That's it. :slight_smile:

(On XP, it doesn't seem to install the preview handler, although it might on XP machines with Outlook 2007, which I haven't tested.)

OK, here's what I did re QVP11. Bottom line - all was successful

I went to their site, and reviewed things there. They clearly state that it won't work in Win 7 64 bit, only Windows 7 32 bit. This is what I've been told all along. But I know that it does, based on this thread.

I placed a call to them, and the call was answered by someone directly, - no operator. I asked if he could handle some pre sales tech talk. He said he probably could, but would connect me to tech support if needed.

I went through the tech discussion with him about 32 and 64 bit. He was aware of Opus, and I told him about the success with Opus 9 64 bit. He told me straight out - it won't work there. He explained to me that the program itself would run OK in Win 7 64 bit, but that the preview handler would not be capable of working in any 64 bit software. This was slightly different from the statements made on their page. And, he said that the viewers would definitely not cooperate with any 64 bit software such as Windows Explorer, and Opus 64 bit. All this in spite of my telling him that it does work.

He suggested I download the trial version, but I told him about that problem, and that I did not want to do that. He said there was a 30 day money back guarantee on the paid version. But, when using a credit card, their site said the cancellation had to be made the same day - very strange.

In any event, I decided to purchase the program, which I did, and paid them the $46 for the downloaded version.

During the install, a window came up asking about integration with various programs, including Windows Explorer, and Corel Office, which has a file navigation window, with a viewer. I checked Explorer, and Corel Office. It accepted Explorer (which I believe is 64 bit}, but said it could not find Corel Office. Strange, I have both version 12, and version X5 installed, and both are 32 bit programs.

The installation completed, and I first ran Windows Explorer - success - all software now displayed in the viewer pane. Then I loaded Opus 9 64 bit, and all the files that could not be viewed before were now previewed in the viewer pane.

I absolutely got the same good result as has been noted here in the Opus forum. I cannot fathom why Avanstar is so totally vehement about it not working with 64 bit software. It works perfectly. But as I noted, it would not connect up with Corel 32 bit ver 12 and X5.

Here's a possible suggestion for Greg Perry to consider. Ask Avanstar about viewer licensing, at some very reasonable cost. Or, if possibly become a "seller" for QVP 11, under which circumstances he would probably pay say 1/2 the "list" price of $46. Then offer Opus owners the program at say $35, when purchased in conjunction with Opus. This would be good sales pitch for selling Opus, and in addition bring in some added revenue for GP software. Of course, already registered owners of Opus would get the same offer.

I'm probably being simplistic about any type of deal, but possibly there is some joint arrangement that could work. But with all the new viewer capabilities having QVP 11 present, that makes Opus 9 more powerful than it already is.

In any event, I now feel that my Opus install has become even more powerful than it was before. To me, Opus 9 with the added QVP 11 viewers, has become the absolute ultimate software of its kind.

I'm very glad that I became a continuing "pest" in this situation, To me it ended up with great final results, thanks to all of you in this forum. :smiley:

Hi all,
I have one more kink to thow into the works. I would love to use QVP 11 with DO but I use DO from a USB key at work. Can QVP 11 be installed on or transfered to my USB key? I would like to use it on my desktop at home and from the key at work. If there is a way to do this (with one license), I will purchase QVP 11. I will research this when I can but if anyone knows or beats me to the answer that would be great.

@Ron Hirsch:
Glad you've finally got the Word Perfect viewer you've been after for so long! I included a thank-you note to yourself and Michael Kenward along with the instructions on using QVP with Opus that I wrote-up. Without both of you we'd probably never have known this was worth trying or would work. Thanks!

Aside from their apparent misconceptions about the 64-bit stuff, Avantstar's support seem excellent in that they respond quickly and aim to help. I was impressed by their response to Jon. (With most companies we'd still be waiting for a reply.)

My guess is that they don't realise the preview handler system is designed to allow 32-bit viewers to be hosted within 64-bit apps. That's one of the great things about preview handlers. Viewers (etc.) which get loaded directly as DLLs -- which is how the QVP viewers worked until now -- require their "bitness" to match what they're being loaded into but that's not required with preview handlers. Preview handlers are loaded into a proxy process which can be 32-bit or 64-bit and which takes care translating between the 32-bit and 64-bit worlds. (The process is prevhost.exe when using Explorer and docsvw32/64.exe when using Opus.)

@daddyman:
Preview handlers need to be installed in the registry so I don't think you could take QVP on a USB stick. You'd have to install it on each machine you wanted to use it on. (Once QVP was installed you could still use Opus itself from a USB stick, though.)

Thanks for the information.
