Vista Beta 2

Sorry for the knee-jerk response. Do you have any idea how MS feels about explorer replacements? (Sincerely curious) I always just assumed they would rather see their own file explorer succeed.

After examination of the vista registry, it seems to me that explorer.exe is called in a new way by underlying OS. The "DelegateExecute" Value (which I haven't seen in previous versions of Windows) seems to have a impact on the way explorer works - and that consequently impacts Opus.

I am only insistent with this because I really have enjoyed DO and am eager to see it work in what will soon be the new windows standard. In the same regard I understand that you guys are aiming at a moving target and can't make the move too early.

Anyway, I was also serious - good luck with the upgrade whenever it happens. I look forward to it.

I'm sure they would rather see their own web browser and media player used too, but that sort of attitude tends to get them into trouble

Hey

I Had Switch the "UAC: Behavior of the elevation prompt for...." to "no prompt" but I Had some problems installing my TV tuner app and driver, so I turned it to "Prompt for consent" (Default) again, restartet and then the probs went away.
What have you done, when saying you have turned all UAC off?

I also run Dopus on vista, and have the same probs with properties and win+e or double-click "Computer"...
I haven't tried the Workaround yet but I was wondering if you had tried, with your wordaround applied, to play with the Misc -> Explorer Replacement -> "Replace Explorer for all buit the following folders:"?

Sorry for the late reply - I must have missed the post notification

Yea I definitely exhaused all of those different options to make sure it wasnt a cofiguration error. Now that I've been working in Vista for a few weeks I have been able to modify the registry to always use DO.

When I find that those registry settings are breaking some core windows functionality, I switch off the registry changes, do whatever it is I need to do, and switch them back on.

It isn't a perfect solution but it gets me by for now. Sucks being obsessive about running betas... but it will be nice having a leg up on Vista when it starts to become the norm.

On another note, it seems MS is starting to integrate explorer into it's outside applications. The biggest example I've seen is Microsoft Groove, part of Office 2007. In a nutshell, Groove is a way to build a windows fileshare with several people from any computer, even over the internet or through firewalls. Features like file change notification and a basic chat utility now happen in the left pane of the explorer window.

If such tools are quickly adopted, it will be more and more necessary to bounce between DO and WinEx depending upon what you want to do. Personally I'd like to have a single way to manage files but it's tough to say if that will be a possibility any more.

After any error, Vista will create a report.
Periodically, Vista will ask you to select which errors to report.
You select from a list of unreported problems and it will send them.
If they have not been reported or have different symptoms, you will also be prompted to allow submission of additional data that was gathered.

In tonight's list were 3 from DOpus as I had to get 8.2.2.2 in then install 8.2.2.3, that would not install without much dinking but finally disabling UAC did the trick.

Enable and send the problem reports folks. Hotfixes and changes to Vista come about through this.

I am going to use DOpus in Vista, but many items do not work.
You have no permissions to many directories, Properties are not available, integration is incomplete.

But still a far cry from the Vista offering. Better (IMO) than Explorer from XP, but can't hold DOpus' jock strap.

I'm sure it'll get there in the end. A lot of my other software that I couldn't do without had major problems on Vista a few months ago. The makers of the software have used the Beta 2 stages of Vista to test and fix the issues with their software and now most of them work fine, ready for the launch. I'm sure Opus will get there as well, but maybe not at launch time.

I had problems installing this from a network drive. As soon as I moved the installer locally I got it to install. No Aero though!

Found Aero! or rather I had to enable "Prefs => Miscallaneous => Miscallaneous => WindowBlinds cmpatability mode"

BTW, I'm running Vista Pre-RC1...looking good, you know!

An update request just to see how you are getting on with DOpus and Vista?

With Build 5585 (Pre-RC1) I had no issues, but with Build 5600 (RC1) I can't get DOpus to install, it sticks at 7% of the way through the installer.

Are you seeing this as well?

Maybe someone who is "in the know" could consolidate the various suggestions here with details on where and how to turn off "UAC" stuff etc etc into a step by step list of things that should be done before and after installing Opus on Vista? I'll give it a shot inside a VM and see what happens...

Disabling UAP is easy, either:

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run > type in MSCONFIG > click Tools (tab) > scroll down > select "Disable UAP" > click Lauch > restart system.

or

Go to Command Prompt, run: secpol.msc

Local Policies / Security Options / select policy 'User Account Control:
Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators' and change the security setting from 'Prompt for consent' to 'No Prompt'.

With RC1 this does not help. To get it to install one has in the end to create manually the program directory path DOpus resides in.

However once loaded then trying to open any any drive into a lister results in a Vista Explorer window opening, so some added security level somewhere is stopping DO integrating.

Oh and yes this was installing in XPSP2 compatability mode and loading as an Admin!

As soon as I can get a copy of RC1...

So basically, DO doesn't work with Vista at the moment.
Damn. I was considering moving to Vista soon.

wrong, it does work (for me anyways with Beta 2). I'm downloading RC1 as we speak 198MB to go

I will post my conclusion and experiences asap

OK how I got it install (this time):

After many attempts of doing-it-the-standard-way, I right-click on the install => go to properties => select Compatibility tab => under compatibility mode select the check box with Winsows XP (Service Pack 2) => OK => dbl-click installer => VOILA!!

Wait up! every time I start DOpus I need to go through the Installation Wizard...to be continued

I can run DOpus without the Installation Wizard kicking off...everytime.

I installed DOpus over the previuos install (see above), this time reversing the compatibility mode i.e. no compatibility mode.

BTW, this all refers to RC1.

Well, I first tried to install it as an admin (logical choice), I believe it failed, and then the program compatibility wizard kicked in & told me it could try to do something ... So I let it do its thing, and it worked.

But, I don't understand why the DO window isn't skinned like the rest of the system.

I know what you mean. You can go to Settings => Preferences... => Miscalleneous => Miscalleneous and mess around with the settings of "Enable Windows XP visual style" and "WindowBlinds compatibility Mode" selecting both gives the closest Vista look but at the expense of the DO "pin" and "zoom" icons in the title bar.

The biggest annoyance I have is that he Windows system/virtual folders are now no longer navigatable!

Open a DO lister; with desktop open in the lister dbl-click any of the icons i.e. "UserName", Control Panel, Computer. On my set up nothing happens: anybody else experiencing this?

Following your suggestions Critical Mass, I had installed V6 though it had a few glitches but I got to do whatever I wanted.

I installed V8 over it and it worked, many fingers crossed on this one.

Many thanks and well done CMass.

BTW, eset are doing something to NOD32 anti-virus and it should be released in a couple of weeks for Vista.

Noddy,

are saying you can navigate OK, in all circumstances in a lister?

So, for example, if you select "computer" in the Folder Tree it will show you a list of all your drives in the lister window. Double clicking on a drive (C:\ for example) takes you "into" that device/folder?

For me it doesn't. Even if I right click and select "Open in Directory Opus" nothing happens. If I right click and select "Open" or "Explore" then it's opened in Explorer (not good, it's better, but, not good).
