Yes, I know it's well outside the scope of DO as a file manager, but still I thought it'd be pretty useful since I find myself quite often switching between my file manager and web browser to check something related to the files I'm browsing.
So, would it be possible to have a browser tab opened as a DO tab? I'm not picky, even something very simple and basic, even IE (ugh).
Viewer pane would be just as good, but how do you do it? There's ActiveX + Preview + Office + Web, but this opens local files - unless you mean something else?
Hm, not quite as useful or comfortable... you can;t add a web shortcut to favorites, either so you can have quick access. Shame - it's so near, yet so lacking...
If you want a web browser, use a web browser. Big, well-funded teams work on browsers full-time and almost all of them are still awful, so we are unlikely to be able to build a worthwhile browser into Opus while also working on core file manager parts. Any quick attempt we did would be barely usable and from then on we'd have an endless list of requests to do this or that until we had a fully fledged web browser awkwardly fused on to a file manager. We're not going to start down that path, sorry.
Opus isn't the operating system and the folder tab strip is not the taskbar.
You probably got me wrong I would never dare ask building a web browser into DO - this would be utterly stupid and a total waste of time. Incorporating an IE browser tab, however, if I'm not mistaken, is quite easy to do - seen it in many much simpler and amateur programs...
That's how the viewer pane does it already, but to make it useful as a general purpose browser that lives in the folder tabs would take a load of UI work. It would also break every command that currently works with folder tabs.
Rendering HTML is only part of what a web browser does. The UI on top of the rendering engine is arguably more important. (e.g. IE has a good renderer now but it's still a horrid browser as the UI on top is missing so many features.)
Having a poor web browser built into Opus would look bad, too. Even if it's a tiny amount of code, people would call it bloat. It'd make the program harder to understand, too.
I truly understand your reservations; and yes I do understand the added features that need to be added (at least: an address bar and the basic buttons). Would it be possible to be offloaded to a plugin then? I don't think anyone would object then...
Yes, I know you're not interested in it, just putting the idea out there...
I don't know why you'd rather change tabs and view a web page surrounded by a now-useless UI for file management, rather than switch windows and view the web page in a web browser. I honestly don't see what's to be gained, unless there's a stack of unstated additional requests (like being able to store web tabs inside layouts, styles, tab groups, etc.)
@leo: here's how I work: Ihave folders with lots of files whose filename is the subject I need to research on our intranet; so I have to copy each filename, go to the browser and paste the filename. Alt-tabbing and getting out of my files environment is certainly much worse and slower. But not a big deal, just a nice-to-have thing
@arkon900: oh, so maybe remove all viewer plugins, eh?
If you prefer to use your default browser, a button or hotkey command like the first one below will do the job. The second option prompts you to type a search string. You could combine the two on a 3-button button.
