After installation almost all control panel items stopped working. I'm using Windows Vista x64 Ultimate. When I click on the windows update icon in the tray next to the clock I get the following error:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association control panel"
The only control panel items that still show up is:
Directory Opus Customize
Directory Opus Prefs
Java
Quicktime
Text to Speech
All of them still work. If I browse to c:\windows\system32 and try to open the cpl files from there they still work.
The link to switch to "category mode" (don't remember if that is what its called) is also gone and only classic mode is available. When i first opened the control panel it was in "category mode" with is what I normally use but after switching to classic I cant switch back.
EDIT: Disabling explorer replacement completely solves the problem. Any of the other 3 replacement options still have the issue
Looks like if Explorer Replacement mode is enabled it causes a 32-bit version of Explorer to be opened for Control Panel. (Presumably the control panel icons you see are the only 32-bit control panel applets on your computer.)
I don't know enough about how Explorer Replacement and Win64 work to offer any suggestions (other than turn off Explorer Replacement for now) but I'll see if Jon has any ideas.
