My file association icons seem to be following a new convention. I suspect that windows update has done something.
At one time I had the ability to associate WAV files separately from FLAC and separately from MP3.
at the moment when I change the application and icon for one it seems all audio files are changed to the latest filetype I have edited.
I have removed all three from the media group.
I prefer to have wav files open in Adobe Audition and FLAC files open in Helium and MP3 Files open in WinAMP.
But more importantly I desire that each file type have a different icon from one another.
I have created custom icons that make it very easy to identify which I am seeing in a long list.
Right now it seems that all audio are bunched together so if I change one audio association all audio files are changed with it.
I have gone through Directory Opus Settings/filetypes and removed the extensions from the audio group.
Is there a work around or has Microsoft screwed me here?
Open With / Default Apps can override the file type that Settings > File Types lets you edit. The whole thing is very complex due to all the layers involved (and Microsoft continually add new ones with each Windows version).
There may be dedicated tools for changing file type icons out there, but I'm not sure. You may have to dig through the registry to make that kind of per-extension customisation system-wide.
If you only care about the icons within Opus, wildcard labels provide an alternative way to replace the icon for a file extension. Those are much easier to set up.

I had been using a tool called "FileTypesMan" from Nirsoft... You can just change the icon that way and leave everything else the same.
What seems to be happening is the Media/Audio category seems to be taking precedence over the individual file type.
I have not been able to discover where windows was hiding it all... I even went so far as to delete the "file types" in question....entirely out of Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ and recreate them blank.
wherever or whatever it is seems to override my changes.
