Just noticed DO is rendering thumbnails (very slowly) of xcfs (Gimp) and psd (Photoshop) files, which are not actual image files, I would call them proprietary work files - anyway I have removed their extensions from FileType Group Images and they are still rendering as thumbnails, is there a way of stopping them doing that - if not put it on the feature request list please.
I don't know anything about xcfs but psd is certainly an image format. Not sure what you mean there.
xcfs is probably rendering via a third-party component, as it's not a format Opus handles itself. I expect you'll see the same in File Explorer for that format. If you can't work out how to control it via the program that installed the thumbnailer (always the best way, if available), you can probably block it via Preferences / Miscellaneous / Shell Extensions (Thumbnail category).
psd is usually handled by Opus, and should be very fast unless the images have extreme resolutions. You can influence how it's decoded via Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced: [Image Formats] psd_image_preference
You can also use Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced: [Image Formats] viewer_disable_internal if you want to prevent Opus from handling certain image formats/extensions, which should work for psd (but not xcfs, as Opus doesn't handle that itself in the first place). But it also shouldn't really be needed for psd.
If you can zip an an example psd file that's slow to display, we can take a look at it and try and work out why that is.
that is a mix of png, psd, xcf and afphoto - out of the three propriety formats only the affinity one is recognizable.
The overlay icons at 4K native are so small they require much squinting of the eyes to distinguish.
I have disabled all thumbnail shell extensions that were 'loaded' and deleted the thumbnail cache, i also put psd and xcf in Preferences / Miscellaneous / Advanced: [Image Formats] viewer_disable_internal
But both are still rendering thumbnails.
Sigh - will just have to use a details mode

What do you see in file explorer?
Looks the same, except Explorer's ignoring the PSD alpha channels (which makes sense as a difference, as Opus handles psd itself).
I would look at the thumbnailers again, and not just the "loaded" ones. They get unloaded pretty quickly once not in use.
turned them all off, cleared cache - they are still rendering.
can be psd be rendered with white background ?
Turn off Image Previews in your Photoshop Preferences if you don't want your .psd files to have thumbnails.
You can set the thumbnail background to any color you want, but it’ll affect all file types that have alpha channels.
