oh, how many's the time I have moved away from a directory when my files weren't in there - only to find out later a filter was still active!
Is there a way to e.g. change the background colour when a filter is active?

You can't make filters trigger a background image change.
Alternatives are:
[ul][li]Making something appear (e.g. in bold red) on the status bar when items are hidden.
[/li]
[li]Showing the filter on your toolbar so you can see when it's set and what to.

I've found how to do that. Now I have to trust myself not to overlook that little thingy at the bottom.
