Does anyone know what I need to do in order to get mkv info tips to display when I hover over an MKV file?

Settings > File Types, expand File Type Groups, double-click Movies.
Make sure .MKV is included there. That should usually be all you need to do, if it's working for other movie types.
Hi Leo - thanks - this is already configured in my filetypes. However, none of the MKV videos I have display a info tip, while all other AVI and MP4 work correctly. All I see is the VLC media player traffic cone and no text for MKV.
Do the file display columns in the Movies category populate for your MKV files? e.g. Aspect Ratio, Dimensions, Duration.
No, not for the MKV files.
Same thing in Win 7 x 64 (no mkv metadata).
Can't believe I'm saying this, but starting to begin to think about maybe looking forward to acquiring a Win 10 machine. 
That's odd. Tooltips and the other columns work fine for mkv files for me and I'm also on Windows 7 x64. Just curious but are you using a codec pack? Such as CCCP or K-Lite?
