Dopus "pro edition"?

I noticed today in About box of Dopus 10.1.0.1 it says "pro edition". I never noticed this before. Does this mean GPSoft is planning to release different editions of Dopus?

We wondered when someone would notice that in the beta.

Exact details aren't set in stone yet (and the names may change) but a "light" edition is planned, and present in the current beta.

Existing certificates automatically enable the "pro" edition, which is unchanged apart from now having a name to differentiate it from the new "light" edition.

cool....if by lite you mean free.

Free or not, that should depend on the features that remain in the Lite version...if you would ask me.

Is there somewhere on the site a comparison chart or something like that?

As long as there will be no "ultimate" edition which costs double
(certain Greek competitor comes to mind xD )

Hmmm...isn't there already a light version called T....C........!!!!!!!!!

I don't believe so.

You can play with it though. Download the latest beta and install fresh (I used a VM). During install, you can pick Light or Pro.

I really like the idea of a Light (or even free version). I have a lot of family and friends that I would like to get on dopus. But never tried to convince them since I know they would never buy it (too expensive). But a free version! I'd just give it to them and make them learn

I think a free version would also lead to more Pro sales eventually. More people using the program, talking about it, spreading the word. Then some of those people wanting more features, would upgrade to Pro.

 for a free, light version! (please)

Don't worry, no Ultimate edition is planned. Nothing really changes for anyone who already owns Opus or who wants to buy it and get all the power that it has now.

The aim is to offer something for people who aren't happy with Explorer etc. but who also don't need the full power of Opus enough to justify paying the full price.

Pricing and exact features in the "light" version are still to be confirmed, but it will still be Directory Opus. We don't think there is much point in releasing something that is so cut-down it doesn't add any real value over Explorer.

IMO, Even dopus "light" with no preferences, or the ability to add toolbars/buttons is already 10x better than Vista/7 explorer

Keep up the great work and thanks for thinking of offering a "light" version. If there is a price tied to it, maybe offer packs of 3, 5 or 10 to cover families and friends?

I want the data center version!

Opus lite (but free) without preferences that's a great idea ktbcrash! Maybe even something such as limited preferences (but you must be able to see full prefs so that you see what you're missing in lite).

As for paid Opus lite, I cannot imagine what could be removed (everything is Dopus) :astonished:

Anyhow it will be interesting!

I don't know where this free idea came from but it's not happening unless food, vet bills, electricity, rent, internet, computers and all the other things we need to work on Opus full-time and live our lives are also going to be free as a result of a utopian society quietly breaking out over the weekend and us somehow missing the change.

Where it came from? It's obvious that everyone would like everything for free.
Just plzzz give us DOpus with all those good things I use and without stuff I don't use and give me that for free. It should be for free because it's not as good as DOpus Pro, shouldn't it?

The idea - I suppose - is to give something less loaded with features (I'm sure most people use about 30% of DOpus functionality) to users who think 85 AUD is too much for file manager. They don't need so many functions so they will be happy that they get still very good application for not-so-much.

Could I make what I hope is a constructive suggestion that could help us all keep buying our food and fixing our children's and our cats' teeth.

Clearly the Lite version will not have all the configurability of the Pro version. Many people, however, would like to configure DOpus on one computer and then copy that configuration via the backup/restore function to other computers on their network.

My suggestions is that what ever else it may contain, the Lite version should be able to receive as backup a configuration that has been set up on the master computer running the Pro version.

Buying Pro for multiple computers really would empty one's bank account very quickly. Hence if the Lite version were much cheaper, then people would actually spend more money on DOpus buying Lite for their other computers --- there's usually no more that one nerd per household. There should, in this framework, be a steeply falling bulk discount for installing Lite on multiple computers within a network and/or family, otherwise it wouldn't be taken up.

As would buying multiple computers in the first place. The money is there for hardware but runs out when it comes to software?

I think between the light version, USB export license (and dongle mode meaning you don't have to run the exported copy from slow USB media) and discounts for buying multiple licenses, most bases will be covered if they aren't already.

The issue that Dopus has to face is, from someone coming from a build-in free explorer, the price to pay may seem to be too high. You don't purchase a 60€ software like you buy a 10€ one. This is a real long term investment and you think twice about it before clicking on the "place order" button.

That being said, I made the step myself several years ago and, trust me, I will never go back from dopus. Once you know what you can get from this software, you realize that browsing directory and managing files in a more convenient way than you can do with explorer is just 5% of the features of dopus.

Really, I'm not joking, the product is worth the price !

And to the dopus team : thank you, keep up the good work

Comparing to Windows Explorer you all should not forget, that this built-in filemanager never reaches DO-standard, but has extended functionality in Windows 8 and most people (no power-users like us) will love it more than ever because they do not it better and do not want to know it better (cause PC is just a tool to do their work).

Most important thing is that DO must be as powerful as possible but also that easy like Explorer. And one thing that really is a DO disadvantage is the non-existing support for some external devices (MTP, ...), which are better integrated in Explorer. E.g. just try to explain "normal" users, that default toolbar will not work the same when such a device is used.

...finally to say that best could be a free, but heavyily limited version of DO. Like MS does indirectly: Let them all copy and use Windows, now they all need it cause they do not want to learn Linux or iOS. But they also do not want to learn "complicated" things like "how to save and use different lister styles" or regex (so some templates should be implemented) Just my opinion...

This is something I must agree with. As a matter of fact, when browsing my Nokia phone (C65, Symbian) DO toolbars don't work.
