Drag and Drop Not Working

I'm not entirely sure when this stopped working, but I’m fairly certain it used to work before. Initially, First I couldn’t drag and drop between panels within the same OPUS instance, but with the latest beta release, that functionality has been restored.

However, I still can't drag files from OPUS to an application on another screen in my multi-screen setup. This issue occurs with all applications, including web browsers. If OPUS is on one screen and the browser or any other app that supports drag-and-drop (e.g., for uploading files) is on another, dragging a file from OPUS to that app does nothing. However, if the app is on the same screen as OPUS, I can drop the file without any issues. The only way I can drop files onto another screen is if I drag them directly to the desktop.

This is really an issue, given a work on a 3 montior setup. If I use windows explorer i am able to drag and drop without any issues. I am using 13.13.1, on a windows 11 pro 24H2, machine.

Check that Opus isn't being run elevated (if it is it will say ADMINISTRATOR in the title bar).

If it's not that, it could be your anti-virus blocking it from interacting with other software.

If your screens use different DPI scaling, instead of the same on all of them, then it looks like a recent Windows update introduced a bug that breaks drag & drop between screens in some situations:

Thanks, I just checked, it is not running in elevated mode.

Yep, I’m experiencing the same issue. I set both monitors to the same scale, and now I can drag files without any issues. I’m not sure this is a Windows problem, it seems more like a DOPUS to me, especially since dragging and dropping works fine in Windows Explorer. Also with the previous beta, I couldn’t even drag and drop between two panes within the same DOPUS instance on the same monitor.

I hope DOPUS is working on a fix...

In the thread I linked to, it's confirmed to still be a problem for people seeing it even when trying older versions of Opus which used to work for them on the same setup.

Furthermore, drag & drop is handled by the program you drop on to, not the one you drop from.

So if this has suddenly broken, it's likely due to a new bug in Windows, unfortunately. Which also explains why we've had 3 similar reports in the last week and none before that.

(Opus and File Explorer being different is likely because the two processes handle DPI differently. But it shouldn't matter when dragging from Opus on to another program, if the OS is working properly.)

Could you post a screenshot of the system Display Settings control panel showing how you have your monitors configured? And also list what the resolutions and scaling settings are?

Perhaps, but given it works with other softwares, Explorer from windows, files, total commander but not with DOPUS, not sure its really a windows issue....

And does it fail in all directions? E.g. 1->2, 1->3, 2->1, 2->3, 3->1, 3->2?

Does it work dropping into any apps or fail in all apps?

Also what other software is installed and running? Anything that changes how the mouse, windows or drag and drop behave?

1 -> 2: okay
1 -> 3: error
2 -> 1: error
2-> 3: error
3 -> 2: okay
3 -> 1: error

It fails with all apps I had at hand, that i used previously.

  • moving to edge
  • moving to firefox
  • moving to SmugMug uploader
  • moving to cyberduck
  • moving to explorer

Regarding what software is installed, i have a long list, (ex: powertoys, sharex, ghelper) but nothing new, same that i was using prior to the current issue.

Thanks!

Anything that updated recently?

Okay everyone! So, Leo, sorry for accusing DOpus as the issue. It seems the culprit is a Microsoft update KB5050094. I seemed to also have issues dragging items in Adobe Indesign, and started searching. I found a random post here that talked about Premiere not dragging dropping on second screens, and it also mentioned the mismatch scaling. Uninstall it, and boom, everything works again. Here is the MS post about this optional patch.

So at least this part isn't a DOpus issue, but affects many things on second screen, and maybe this post can help anyone else having issues.

Thanks, Leo and your team for an awesome piece of software. I use it daily and you can see how this bug was affecting my workflow! Have a great week!

Hi, I'm new to this software and i'm having a similar issue. I used powershell to confirm that KB5050094 is NOT installed.

In powershell:
try {
Get-HotFix -Id KB5050094 -ErrorAction Stop
Write-Output "KB5050094 is installed."
} catch {
Write-Output "KB5050094 is NOT installed."
}

This is my monitor setup

I run dopus in 4, can drag and drop to 1, but not to 3 and 2. This behaviour only started today as far as I can tell. I don't believe any updates have installed recently. Windows explorer does not have this issue. Changing scalings of screen 3 to 100% had no effect. Resolutions and scalings as follows:

1 2880x1800 200%
2 2560x1440 100%
3 2880x1800 200%
4 2560x1440 100%

Running dopus 13.13, but have since installed 13.13.3 beta to try and resolve the issue. Didn't work.

Windows version: 24H2
Installed Updates:
[01]: KB5049622
[02]: KB5048779
[03]: KB5051987
[04]: KB5052085

To prove i'm not crazy :grin:

Maybe another update causes it as well (or instead). We're not really sure.

Thinking logically, if the behaviour only started today, and you hadn't updated Opus today, then it must have been due to something else that changed.

I agree its not the Opus update that caused it, but for some reason only opus seems to have the issue.

It’ll probably affect any process that’s DPI aware but not per-monitor DPi. That’s a lot of things, but maybe not the things you drag from/to.

Is this a related issue? I can't drag drop directories to my favorites bar. I recall being able to do this?

Can you have different display settings for two monitors?

If you have a computer will multiple monitors, the display settings will need to match the physical setup of the monitors for the mouse pointer to move smoothly from monitor to monitor. To adjust your display settings, right click on any open area of your computer's desktop. Select Display settings.

Basically if you use 2 monitors get same make and size and use same dpi for both
In older windows versions it didn't really matter but new features are not supported by graphics and monitor drivers in relation to this issue. Older windows versions and software required less ram usage and that could be a factor.
