Find Files (content) will find certain strings of text but not others whithin same file

One of the reasons we switched to DO is because windows search sucks at searching file content & everything else like...searching.
I sold my boss on switching and now he showed me that it is randomly not finding text that is obviously in the file. For example, in the attached file, DO will not find 78319 but, will find 80754a. We sent the file over to my computer and I searched for a few different strings and it found most but would not find the same ones he was having trouble with. Now I just got back from lunch and on my computer, it will find everything within that file. I changed nothing. The computer was just idle for an hour. His, however, still will not find certain strings that are obviously there.

When it comes to Office documents, Opus uses the installed IFilter to search them (and this is a component that comes with Office). If for whatever reason it's not returning a particular string from the file I don't think there's anything we can do about it.

You should get the same results in File Explorer, as this should be using the same IFilter.

This is all the text that gets returned from the IFilter for the particular file in question:

I notice that you have specified the File Type Group as Documents. Are you sure your .xls files are actually registered as Document in filetypes?

What happens if you take that away and just search files?

Edit: I'm not sure I understood the problem. Is it random as in, a different result each time, or do you and your boss get different results consistently?

Edit2: You could try reinstalling the filters from here.

Thank you Jon. What did you use to show me what was returned by IFilter? Could my computer be finding it better because I have OpenOffice installed as well?

It's a tool that comes with the Windows SDK called filtdump. I've attached it here if you want to give it a try, but I'm not sure if it works without the SDK installed or not.

filtdump.zip (85.4 KB)

It needs to be run from a DOS prompt.

It doesn't matter if I search all files. It still will not find the string.

No, it is not random. It consistently misses that string on my bosses computer. After letting my computer sit idle over lunch, it consistently seems to find everything in the file (works as it should).

I just reinstalled the IFilters from the link you provided. No joy.

I am starting to wonder if it works better on my computer because I have OpenOffice installed and maybe they provide a better IFilter.?.?.?

You need to put quotes around the full path and filename since it has spaces in it.

Thank You. That created a dump. I'll get back to you. Can I PM you the results? There is just some stuff that we don't want to post to a public forum (nothing sketchy).

Ok, so, I have narrowed it down a bit. It is definitely a problem if the file is open. Is there a way around that? Other than that, the only time OP fails is also when the Ifilter misses the string.
