How to use Opus on Computer with no Admin rights

On my current work computer, Opus is installed but I've not been able to perform updates from quite some time due to my company policy which removed Admin rights to users.

I have to change my work computer and I am wondering what is the best option to continue using Opus.
What I can think of:

  • Request temporary admin rights to install opus (it might be accepted, but will be one shot, meaning, I won't be able to perform updates afterwards)
  • Export my current configuration to a USB key and use it on the new laptop.

For that second option, a few questions come to mind:

  • Will I be able to perform updates from the USB portable installed Opus?
  • Should I export to a folder and use the key only as a dongle? What is the best option/interest of using the key only as a dongle?
  • I'm not sure I'll still be able to use the "explorer replacement" options with a USB installation?

Thanks in advance.

Only your config, and only manually by copying files.

Yes, at least that's what I do. Any old USB 1.1 device will be ok, and you don't have to worry about its performance or losing it.

Thanks for this quick answer.
I'm not sure to understand the first answer about updates.
Do you mean I'd have to update my Opus version on another computer, do an USB export and then retrieve the files (executables and some dll) to copy them over the folder I'd have Opus located on the computer without admin rights?
If so, it's fine by me (not as smooth as running an installer, but I will surely not update on a daily basis  ).

Yes, if you can export with the dongle device attached you are golden. Save the files anywhere you like. The dongle won't show any Opus files. You'd need to format the drive to remove the license info.

Well ... I can for the moment, since I still have the older computer, but that won't last: in a few weeks, I'll have to return it.

So, best guess is I have to do the following:

  • Export current config to a folder + use USB as a dongle
  • Copy that folder on new PC and use key
  • Build a VM with an installed Opus, import config from old computer on it.

And whenever I want to upgrade:

  • Export config from new PC portable Opus
  • Import config on VM (to get any update made on toolbars, ...), perform update on VM installed Opus (to be sure any configuration impact linked to the update also updates this specific config)
  • Re-export from VM to a folder + usb as a dongle, and copy new export to new PC

Did I get this right?
Many thanks @lxp

No, you can't export from a portable installation. You would need to copy the settings manually. But the folder structure is very similar, so it's certainly doable.

@PassThePeas,

I have asked a similar question some time ago:
Portable version of Directory Opus?

You are lucky that your working PC supports USB dongles

I hope DOpus will provide a true portable version at some point.

Thanks for chiming in. I did not find this post while searching.

By default, they do not !! But, I'm working (at least for the moment), in a context where I require to have access to USB ports for mass storage, so they make some exceptions...
