More of the same - Vista + DO9 issues

Hi all, I seem to be struggling with some of the more popular problems that people have posted, yet haven't resolved them yet. Hoping that one of the forum admins may have some advice for me.
PC is Vista Ultimate with DO8 installed before DO9
Problems:
1, Crash during upgrade
2, Exported settings (during upgrade, cannot import them)
3, DO9 won't run at Startup
4, DO9 doesn't run when double clicking desktop (funny i really miss that)
5, Always get the UAC prompt when starting from Icon
6, Really minor, but the icon still had no.8 despite uninstalling.

Now, for #1, i did download on day of release, and saw a thread to download another copy which although still v 9.0.0.0 is different. 1k bigger i notice. I ran the original v9 a few times after crash, and it ran ok. Since getting "newer" version I have installed over the top, and now finally another clean install.

#2, Import of my settings does bring a few things back, but (rough guess) only about 20% of stuff. ie: no backgrounds, themes, status bar settings, FTP stuff. Really only got a few toolbars and buttons back.

#3, Read the windows defender thread, and the compatibility thread. Still no good. Im hoping that after proper uninstall/reinstall the compatibility thing shouldn't apply anyway. Another minor question here (should i tick "run this program as administrator" ? My user account is in the Domain admins group (yes i run a domain at home), but i have UAC switched ON.

#4, As it says

#5, Maybe that's the norm and im gonna have to get used to it.

If anyone can help, that would be much appreciated.

Quad

Sounds like something is quite messed up as you shouldn't get a UAC prompt from running Opus. The "run as administrator" box should not be ticked. That would explain 3 4 and 5.

My guess is there are still some things left over from forcing Opus 8 to run on Vista.

Config import should be fixed by the second Opus 9 release but if you still have problems it might be worth sending your config to GPSoft. There's no point doing that until you've got a clean install working properly though as right now most problems are likely due to the program not being installed properly.

If you still see an Opus 8 icon, did you reboot after installing Opus 9? If you did reboot then I would do a clean uninstall, manually verify the Program Files\GPSoftware directory is empty and the HKLM\Software\GPSoftware and HKCU\Software\GPSoftware registry keys are also empty, then reboot and install Opus 9 fresh. See if everything works and if it's not looking good, try importing your Opus 8 config.

I experience this as well, and I never installed Opus 8 on Vista.

Recently, or during the betas? The function was broken in the early betas but has worked for a long time since.

If Quad is running dopus.exe as administrator (not recommended!) then it will almost certainly break desktop double-click because the small program (dopusrt.exe) which handles desktop double-click cannot send messages to dopus.exe to tell it to open, because non-admin processes are not allowed to send messages to admin processes.

While testing Vista with DO8 I found a lot of bugs esp. with explorer-replacement and other windows-integrations (some non-working settings couldn't be restored, so I had to restore my Sysimage!).

You shouldn't update from installed DO8 (on Vista) to DO9. I didn't import the settings, too. I configured DO "by-hand" with a XP-DO8 running on a second pc instead. Just to be sure

Let us discuss this issue in the thread linked below, so everyone involved can compare notes.

Launch DO9 with double-click not working in WinVista

Thanks for replying Nudel.

I've followed your advice and the results are in. But first when I asked the question should I tick the box "run as administrator", it was just a question. I hadnt actually ticked that box. Although when it was DO8 i did have to tick it because otherwise my synchronising would'nt work.

Anyway, I have completely uninistalled DO9. Chose option to not save any settings. Deleted the remaining (empty) GP Software folder in Prog Files. Checked that the 2 Control Panel applets had gone, and deleted the reg keys you specified. Rebooted 3 times and waited 2 days.

Rebooted again this evening. Did a fresh install, chose the default options for everything. Remember I am admin account user with UAC switched ON at this point. When asked to run DO9 now I say yes. It runs fine. When I reboot however, it is blocked at startup. Also, the desktop has the DO8 icon, easily changed but where does it get it from. Double clicking the desktop also does nothing when DO9 is running. But it does do something if DO9 is not running, i get an error message which says;

DOpusRT: Unable to launch Directory Opus from "C:|Program Files\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\dopus.exe"

To get DO9 running I can click the icon on the desktop, after which i get the UAC prompt. If I give it permission it will then run. But after that, dbl clicking the desktop does nothing at all.

I checked in Task Manager for the prescence of the file you mentioned in the other thread (under the Command Line column) and it was there.

I have'nt tried to import my settings yet, nor have i entered my registration key again, as I feel i will be having to uninstall again soon.

Seems to me that from what you've said my main problem is that I get a prompt from UAC everytime i try to start the program. Because the blocked startup section is only blocked because it wants me to give it permission to run.

I haven't tried to install or run with UAC turned off yet, but I guess that's the next step. Incidentally I have several other progs that run successfully at start up, including Get Right, Daemon Tools, MS Office Groove, One Note, McAfee AV, etc, etc.

Any ideas ?

Just noticed something else. When DO9 is not running, ie becasue it's been blocked at startup. I cannot double click on other items on the desktop. Example, I have a few actual folders on the desktop, which contain various files, but when I double click to open it, I get the same error about Dopus as I mentioned above.

Yes you can click on that link I posted above an join the discussion on this very same issue in the thread I linked. We generally like to keep threads to one topic, and if a thread is already started, we want people with the same issue to join a thread already in progress. That way we don;t have to keep answering things twice.

I'll replying in the other thread and lock this one to keep everything in one place. I'll link back to this thread from the other one too so people can read the history if they want to.

(I'm sure there used to be a thread-merge function. Maybe I'm thinking of the old forum software!? Anyway, it's not a big deal, let's continue over in the other thread. See you on the flip-side.)
