Per file custom icons?

I want to overwrite the Icons on a per file basis.
I found that I could make a custom label and change the file icon but this would be to much work and hard to manage. Is there another way?

The reason is PureRef (an image reference board) doesn't generate automatic thumbnails so I would like to create custom thumbnails from screenshots. Then I would know whats inside the file without opening it.

Labels is the only way other than writing a plugin to generate thumbnails for the format.
