Doing a separate post for it just in case.
Automatic Formats is not remembering collapsed state of grouped lister, always showing expanded groups when returning to folder.

AFAIK folder formats don't record individual group expansion at all, whether automatic or not. Explicit formats have a checkbox to collapse all groups initially (instead of them all being expanded), but that's it.
Put it as feature request then please.
